The physiology of stretching

Check out this very informative video explaining the physiology of stretching from Dianna Cowern (AKA Physics Girl) featuring the hyperflexible contortionist Sofie Dossi  and University of Southern California Biomechanist K. Michael Rowley.

Stretching regularly can help your flexibility by changing the water content in your muscles, stem cell differentiation, your sensitivity to the mild pain of gentle stretching, the contract/relax reflex loop from your muscle to your spinal cord, and muscle fibre length.

Brazilian ultra-endurance athlete Fernanda Maciel

Meet Fernanda Maciel, Brazilian ultra-endurance athlete quit her job in 2006 and moved to the village of Coll de Nargó, population 40, where she now spends around four hours a day training for ultra-endurance races around the world. She hasn't watched TV since 2005, and meditates regularly, occasionally going on 10-day silent retreats.

Fernanda Maciel set a world record when she summited Argentina’s Aconcagua mountain, because she was the first female to ever run the entire way. But for a woman who grew up in a family of fighters, running up mountains is all in a day’s work — and the stuff of dreams.Fernanda Maciel set a world record when she summited Argentina’s Aconcagua mountain, because she was the first female to ever run the entire way. TRX Home Kit PackageBarefoot are now suppliers of Official TRX products in Ireland. One of our most popular new products is the TRX Home Suspension Training kit which is a superb product from TRX. Read our review below.

The TRX Home Suspension Training kit comes with all the stuff you need to use it at home, you can connect it to a door as suggested but I have double-doors between my living and dining rooms so I wedge the doors open and hang it off a 2 x 4 that sits on top of the doors. It comes with exercise cards and there's plenty of videos to follow from the official site where you can register your kit and get free access to training regimes using your hologram code. Suspension training is strange to begin with but you quickly find that's part of what keeps it interesting. Pikes and push-ups and all the normal movements are much harder because you've much less stability to begin with.
